Vehicle transport is a major industry with a number of transport options available for international shipping. One of the more popular options is the Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) mode of shipping which is facilitated by vessels that are specifically designed to transport wheeled cargo.
The appeal of the RORO method is due to a number of factors:
A more inexpensive alternative than paying for a shipping container
In loading and retrieving the vehicle from the vessel
Vehicles are stored in wind-and-watertight vessels
RORO vessels can transport all types of static, motorized and wheeled cargo
FULLY ENCLOSED VEHICLE SHIPPING
NO INSECT DEBRIS | NO RED DUST | NO TRUCK/ROAD GRIME | NO STONE CHIPS
RORO vessels are all inclusive when it comes to the type of cargo they can transport such as:
Heavy machinery and Equipment
The concept of RORO was initially developed by Japanese car manufacturers who required a more economic and efficient solution for transporting their large vehicle fleets to the United States of America. The vehicles are loaded onto the vessel by means of built-in ramps and are physically driven on and off the vessel as opposed to being lifted on by crane in containers.
The RORO method is preferred for the logistical headaches it reduces such as the cargo being moved faster, eliminating the need for a crane at the port and more cargo able to fit on the vessels.
